About

Welcome to SpoonTheFood!

A place where flavours meet health and satisfaction. A place which brings colours and warmth to your life. My name is Alanka and I created this blog for my amazing mum, Uma to share her tremendous experience and wisdom about everything culinary.

With over 40 years of professional cooking experience, running a successful Indian restaurant for 34 years and a head full of genius and delicious recipes, Uma is the lady behind the food and lifestyle blog, SpoontheFood.

My mum is born and brought up in India, travelled the world until she decided to settle down in Austria – a beautiful country in the middle of Europe. Over 40 years ago, Indian food was very exotic and strange to most people in Austria, but together with my dad she could stimulate the taste buds of the locals and was well known for her signature kitchen.

If I had to describe her cuisine in four words: Colour. Flavour. Health. Satisfaction.

Alanka

Her food tastes delicious, a mouth full of flavour that is so good for you. I have learned that tasty food can be healthy and satisfying – it has such a tremendous impact on your mental and physical wellbeing. Over the years I have eagerly watched my mum cook, wrote down recipes and learned lots of dishes via videocalls. As I am a single child, I feel the urge to learn and collect so I can pass on her knowledge and spread her positive food spirit. Our family and friends soon asked to share my mum’s recipes and my parents’ loyal guests. So here we are creating this platform to share with you.

A melting pot. Because – why not?

Through all the experience, adapting to new cultures and travelling the world my mum’s cuisine is a melting pot today – you will find lots of different influences in her food but all colourful, tasty, healthy and satisfying.

Her defining characteristic would be her enthusiasm and passion for her food. Her love for spices, food, travel, art and yoga are all apparent within her writing, as she aims to create a hub for those who aspire and hope to be inspired. Dive into the recipes and find out yourself – your feedback is very much appreciated.

Catch up with her and check out what she was up today on Instagram and Pinterest.
